I’ve done a lot of unique things in my life, but it’s quite possible that Grave Digger is at the top of the list.
So far, the articles I have written have been focused on how to become ____ but you might be asking yourself with this one, “why would I want to be a grave digger?”
This is a fair question, and definitely one worth asking yourself if this is something you’re considering. For me personally the opportunity to do something new and interesting was a chance I couldn’t pass up.
My brother and I both worked at a cemetery for an entire summer, and let me tell you it has given us many stories to tell.
You need to take this seriously
When I think of being a Grave Digger the thing that I think of most is how serious the job is. There aren’t a lot of laughs – for obvious reasons – and the job you’re doing NEEDS to be taken seriously. You interact with people when they are at their most vulnerable, and the realities of living in this world can’t be avoided in a graveyard. Not every funeral or burial service is for an old grandparent that has lived a long and peaceful life and died pain free in their sleep.
It’s for these reasons that I didn’t go back to working at a grave yard, and if this is a job you’re considering you need to ask yourself if it’s a job you can do mentally.
As far as the actual work is concerned, it’s not so different from working at a golf course or a public space. You mow grass, make general repairs, and dig holes.
As I mentioned though, the seriousness of the space you’re working in meant that we could not listen to music – on headphones, or otherwise – and we could not work while services were being performed. Also, due to the quiet that is promoted in that atmosphere, we often didn’t talk or if we did it was quietly to ourselves.
This might be ideal for some people, but certainly isn’t for everyone.
How to become a Grave Digger
If YOU are interested in becoming a Grave Digger, you need to be physically fit, like working outdoors, and to apply. That is about it. Experience driving tractors, and back hoes would also be an asset.
